You may also submit that compelling question for Marshall or Jim’s consideration during a Dialogue in Leadership teleconference.

President's Letter

July 2009

Dear Friends:

July is a great month for leaders.  July 13th was the inaugural event for the Hesselbein Global Leadership Academy at the University of Pittsburgh, named for Leader to Leader Institute Chairman and Founding President Frances Hesselbein.  The program was an inspirational and a fitting tribute to Frances’ lifelong dedication to leadership across all sectors of our society.  Jim Collins was brilliant in his key note address and Frances’ reminiscence of the contribution the University of Pittsburgh made to a young woman from "the mountains of Western Pennsylvania” left everyone present dabbing at their eyes.

Along with several members of the staff and board of governors, we had the pleasure of meeting many of the college men and women from across the country selected as the first class of protégés who are proving themselves to be leaders of the future.  Many are already planning for careers in the social sector.  The mentors that inspired them throughout the inaugural program are leaders from the corporate, social and government sectors. (Read more about the event on our Blog)

While we were in Pittsburgh, we also had the opportunity to spend time with two other inspiring women leaders, General Gale Pollock (US Army, ret.) who now leads the new Fox Center for Ocular Restoration and Agnus Berenato, the Head Coach of the University of Pittsburgh’s women’s basketball team.

I was also reminded this month that to be a leader, you do not have to found an organization, you do not have to be the president of a company or a country, your name does not have to appear on press releases or plaques. I recently had the privilege of meeting an inspiring leader, Eric, the manager of the Starbucks around the corner from the Leader to Leader Institute office in New York.

When I moved to the city in October, I soon discovered that depending on which way I walked to work, I could visit as many as five different Starbucks locations.  I tried them all but soon settled on 51st Street where, even though it was the smallest of the five, Eric led his team with poise and praise.  He rolled up his sleeves and greeted customers, remembering the names and preferences of regulars, processed food requests and lavishly provided feedback to members of the team, always encouraging them to do their best and always showing through his own behavior, what that meant.  I was sad to learn that Eric was leaving to manage a restaurant elsewhere in the city and was not sure whether the service would be the same without him.  I should not have worried; the team carries on with the same spirit instilled when Eric was there.

Please read the articles below to learn about new ways that the Leader to Leader Institute will make leadership insights and inspiration available in the coming months.

Sincerely,

Susan Phillips Bari signature

2009 Drucker Centennial Conference

In mid-June, Leader to Leader Institute Chairman of the Board Frances Hesselbein, Board Secretary Geneva Johnson and President Susan Bari, travelled to Seoul, Korea to attend the first of a series of events being held around the world to honor Peter Drucker’s life and work on the centennial of his birth. The Key to Responsible High-Performing Society, hosted by The Peter F. Drucker Society of Korea, The Drucker School at Claremont Graduate University and the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry focused on the management of ideas, people and the environment.

Two days of inspiring presentations from scholars, executives and entrepreneurs from the social and private sectors around the globe fulfilled the conference goals of exploring the "essential principles and practices of knowledge-based innovation in business and social enterprise.”

KoreaComplementing the formal sessions of key notes and panel discussions, we were treated by our hosts to memorable dinners and tours of the city and environs. Kook-Hyun Moon, a member of the General Assembly, Republic of Korea and Former President of Northern Asia Operations, Kimberly-Clark Corporation and Former CEO Yuhan-Kimberly hosted a dinner at Korea House for us and representatives from the Bright China Social Fund, Chairman Minglo Shao, Robert La and Henry To.

Korea Following the conference we spent an informative day travelling to the Yuhan Kimberly plant.

We were briefed on their Drucker-inspired “Learning Cafeteria” and planted a tree in the Drucker Forest to commemorate the occasion.

Leader to Leader Board of Governors Profile: Joel Barker

Joel Barker After meeting and working with visionary thinkers in both North America and Europe, Joel Barker discovered that the concept of paradigms, previously sequestered to scientific discussion, could explain revolutionary change in all areas of human endeavor.

By 1980, corporations and nations were seeking his advice and he popularized the concept of paradigm shifts for the corporate world.
Joel Barker is a futurist, filmmaker and author. His videos, Discovering the Future: The Business of Paradigms and The Power of Vision, both best sellers, have been translated into more than a 15 languages.

His book, Future Edge was published in 1992 and was listed as one of the most influential business books that year by the prestigious Library Journal.

His most recent book, Five Regions of the Future, co-authored with Dr. Scott Erickson, examines how technology is beginning to cluster into technological ecosystems and what that means to our future.

His current focus is on two topics: “Innovation at the verge”— a new place for finding the big ideas for the 21st century; and the importance of understanding and identifying the long-term implications of change. Last year, Barker started the Good News blog, highlighting news gathered from more than 45 publications and electronic sources in an effort to share positive news about the future. He is writing it especially for parents so they can share some good news at the dinner table with their children.

Joel Barker has worked with for profit and social sector organizations all over the world including companies in Singapore, Venezuela, Canada, Mexico and Peru and his honors include an honorary Doctorate in Visionary Leadership from St. Mary's University and the Excellence in Education Award given to him by the international education association, Pi Lambda Theta for his part in supporting educational innovation. In 2007, he was named by the University of Minnesota’s College of Education as one of their 100 most influential graduates in the last 100 years.

We are happy to announce Joel as the newest member of the Leader to Leader Board of Governors.
