February 2010

Dear Friends:

In 1990, our work with Peter Drucker’s Self Assessment Tool and The Five Most Important Questions began. The demand then was performance, and the same demand exists today and for the future.

On Friday, February 19, Leader to Leader presented a one-day training workshop on the third edition of Peter Drucker’s The Five Most Important Questions led by certified facilitator Cathey Brown, Executive Director of Rainbow Days, Inc. in Dallas, Texas - combining strategic planning and performance evaluation with a focus on results.

Attendees included senior-level leadership from 19 social sector organizations including "I Have A Dream" Foundation, American Foundation for the Blind, Girls Incorporated, Reading Excellence and Discovery (READ) Foundation and The YMCA of Greater New York/North Brooklyn.

Here is a small collection of photos from the Workshop:

The Five Questions Workshop

If Peter Drucker were here to sit down with your organization, he would ask, "What is your mission? Who is your customer? What does your customer value? What are your results?" and "What is your plan?"

Just as when we were founded, in 1990 as the Peter F. Drucker Foundation for Nonprofit Management, we are committed today to a journey of self-discovery. Please contact us to learn more about The Five Questions Workshop.

Sincerely,

The Leader to Leader Institute Staff

Leadership Dialogues

Mark Thompson, Chairman and Chief Leadership Officer, Leadership DialoguesEach month, bestselling author (Success Built to Last) and business coach Mark Thompson, who collaborated with Leader to Leader Institute to create Leadership Dialogues, and who serves as Chairman and Chief Leadership Officer for the program will share an experience from one of his many leadership interviews. This month, Mark profiles 2003 Nobel Peace Prize winner, Iranian born Shirin Ebadi.

Iranian born Shirin Ebadi, knew from an early age that she was destined for a life upholding justice: "When I was a child and would see a fight break out in the street, I’d rush over to defend the person who was being beaten up, without really trying to understand what the fight was about," she told me.

That love for justice sent Ebadi to law school, when, after graduation, she became a judge. However, because of the Iranian Revolution (the 31st anniversary of which is today), Ebadi was told that she could no longer serve as a judge because she was a woman. Undeterred, she became an attorney at law and began defending human rights cases.

Mission Impact: Breakthrough Strategies for Nonprofit, by Robert M. Sheehan Jr.

Mission ImpactDevotees of Peter Drucker's The Five Most Important Questions will find in Mission Impact a practical guide to strategic change, as well as an accompanying Web site, to help transform your nonprofit organization.

"The method I propose," says Mr. Sheehan, "begins with achieving clarity on mission and intended mission impact. One of Peter Drucker’s five most important questions is 'What are our results?'  Once this is clear then a nonprofit can articulate its Mission Gap – an identification of unmet mission needs.  Often, Mission Gaps are more like Mission Chasms and this is a daunting challenge for nonprofit professionals, but also a part of the responsibility of working in the social sector."
