President's Letter

December 2009

Dear Friends:

Last week the Board of Governors and staff hosted a reception to celebrate the holiday season and to inaugurate the celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Leader to Leader Institute.

Leader to Leader Staff

Leader to Leader Institute staff:  L-R:  Theresa Berenato, Susan Bari, Gloria Fahlikan, Justine Elyse Green, Risa Cohn, Founding President and Chairman of the Board, Frances Hesselbein, and Claire Walden.

While we could not toast each and every one of you, we offer a virtual toast taken from an early newsletter from the Peter Drucker Foundation for Nonprofit Management.

We celebrate the lives you change,
The communities you strengthen,
And the miracles you perform for others.

Happy New Year from the Board and Staff of the Leader to Leader Institute.

Warm regards,

Susan Bari

Drucker's Three Most Important Questions?

Frances Hesselbein (Chairman and Founding President) and Manfred Altstadt (COO of Mutual of America and Treasurer of Leader to Leader Institute) display a poster of Peter Drucker’s original questions (What is our business? Who is our Customer?  What does the customer consider value?). Frances recounted how these simple questions formed the basis for Drucker’s great gift to the Leader to Leader Institute and the social sector at large – “The Five Most Important Questions”.

2010 Applications Now being Accepted

Since 1945, a commitment to corporate social responsibility has been a hallmark of Mutual of America Life Insurance Company. Not only does Mutual of America provide nonprofit organizations with pension and retirement-related products and services, under the leadership of Chairman, President and CEO Thomas Moran, essentially all of Mutual of America employees participate in charitable activities and their donations are matched by the company.

In addition, since 1996, Mutual of America has honored the contributions that nonprofit organizations, in partnership with public, private and other social sector organizations, make to society through the Community Partnership Award.

Praise for Success Built to Last

“While I always believed that passion drives behavior, I realized that it actually mandates success! Understanding what drives you and directing that energy appropriately ensures your work doesn't become burdensome. I enjoyed hearing the stories of the leaders interviewed. It reminded me that being true to yourself, your values and ideals is success defined.”
